Burning Rangers Review

Just like angels with burning hearts we'll face the risk of our liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiives! I might not know a lot about the Saturn's library or Sonic Teams development history at the time. But I know one thing, Burning Rangers is one of the best hi-speed platformers on the 6th generation I've played so far. In the year 20XX, firefighters are mecha suit equipped superheros with jetpacks, water lasers, and the abillity to speak dolphin. Fighting evil green fire that literally fights back, mutant plants, fish, corrupted robots, the cold unforgiving vacuum of space, and a final area thatsdanvdsakl [REDACTED LEVEL 5 CLEARANCE REQUIRED] Uh, well aside from that. The basic gameplay of Burning Ranger is.... Sonic with a jetpack. Honestly I don't know how else to describe it, you have strong momentum that you can carry into aerial movement, hovers, boosts, dodges, glides, it's a ton of versatility and it works well as a "high speed dodging explo...

Pikmin 4 Review

What are pikmin if not tiny swarming dogs I'm not gonna dwell much on the core Pikmin gameplay at this point, it's a well trod system that's perhaps a touch bloated with mechanics, and has a completely unnecessary and annoying auto-lock on mechanic added in. But maybe I'm just complaining about those cause I'm an old fogey who thought of the stick aiming as part of the challenge, not a limitation of the controller. What Pikmin 4 offers however, is an amazing experience that touches on one specific aspect of the Pikmin gameplay loop, and sort of uses it as a base for most of it's challenges and theming. The oft namedropped "Dandori." In essence, a less intimidating word for micromanaging and hyper-optimizing. The ol Pikmin staple of leaving your little leaf fellas to whack away at a wall while you wander the wilds fighting foes and taking treasure. So that by the time you clear an area you come back and hey, the wall is already destroyed and you can s...

Signalis Review

It all comes back around in the end I miss the 6th generation of consoles. For that matter, the 7th and handhelds too. A game could have fully realized 3d graphics, engaging gameplay, and a compelling story on a team of, what, 6-10? Even less sometimes? There's a reason credits lists can be hilariously short on projects back in the day. Even on big name brands. You don't get that anymore. Well, not out of AAA... Signalis is an indie survival horror developed by rose-engine, and to call it delibrately retro would be an understatement. While graphically the PSX/Quake era 3D look is currently trending in nostalgic circles, gameplay wise Signalis doesn't just resemble your Resident Evil or Silent Hill gameplay. It is, top to bottom, a PSX era survival horror experience. Down to the limited inventory, dancing around enemies to conserve ammo, and slightly obscured health and healing systems. This, thankfully, makes the game extremely easy to recommend without spoiling.  If you ...

Tiny Tank Review

Bad things come on small treads Two caveats for this review, one is that there may have been emulator fuckups making some mechanics slightly harder to execute than intended, and two was some aggressive savestating in the 2nd half. But my Ghosts n Goblins rule applies, I beat everything at least once flatly. This game is relatively unassuming at first, a little generic in it's humour and pretty dull gameplay. But a fast enough pace, catchy soundtrack, and enjoyable in-game radio discussions help make it a relatively breezy playthrough... Then you hit the dancing robots, and the game wants you do to some stuttered movement thing that, I'll be honest, straightup doesn't work properly. Then you find yourself in a mine and factory, jumping between magnetic platforms. The magnetism on the platforms doesn't work properly, so it's near impossible to beat the level as intended requiring basically jump spam and blind faith to get through. Then you hit the actual platforming l...
