Furi Review

One Step from Heaven Furi is a mixture of Sekiro esque parrying and bullet hell mechanics. A game distilled down to a select few boss fights and literally nothing else. It has a reasonably forgiving health and lives system as well as a pace that encourages risk taking for speeds sake without punishing you for playing it safe. It's unique fighting game round esque health bar system means that you essentially get 2-3 shots at each phase of a boss fight, which allows for memorization without being tedious. The fights themselves are gorgeous and memorable and every attack is telegraphed so that it never feels like you couldn't predict them in advance. So why isn't it resonating with me all that well. Well, that's a misleading question. I think I know, and it boils down to about three things. Firstly, and most importantly. The dodge. This is your main method of survival, the core of your entire moveset and the basis for 90% of the patterns you'll need to get through in o...

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 "Review"

Don't bother asking me if it's too difficult Curse of the Moon 2 is, unbelievably, a near identical followup to Curse of the Moon 1. Which is, equally shockingly from a Bloodstained series title, a near identical successor to a retro Castlevania title. In this case, the delightfully devilishly hard Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. It plays exactly like you'd imagine a modern followup made by Inti Creates would. With pretty much flawless controls, clever design, and a good understanding of what made the difference between a "hard" NES game and a "bullshit" NES game. But I'll be real with you, I've got nothing else to say but "Go play Castlevania because it's an icon of video gaming and an early example of extremely tight, structured game design. If you're reading my reviews and find them at all useful or informative you'll find a lot to appreciate about the game. If you liked it, play Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, if you ...

Wreckfest Review

The racing sim for people who hate racing sims From the devs of FlatOut. Wreckfest is a demolition derby focused racer that serves as something of a middle ground between Burnout and BeamNG. Letting you smash cars together like a bored kid with some hot wheels and do so with enough realism that it does feel like you're driving an actual car in an actual derby, but not so far as to overwhelm the gameplay. We'll get the basics out of the way first. The campaign is barebones at best and modes and offerings are relatively slim. It takes the structure of having unique tournaments and missions to go through, slowly unlocking more and ranking up with a steady income of new cars and upgrades. But even that feels like I'm giving the design a little much credit. Sure, the odd tractor only demolition derby or race with you in a Reliant Robin against 11 semi trucks is good for a laugh. But at the end of the day the bulk of the gaming experience will be going round dirt or tarmac for ...

Duke Nukem 3D Review

It has.... aged A classic of pop culture and boomer shooters alike. Duke Nukem 3D is a build engine shooter that exploded in popularity back in the day, but is now best known for it's memes and legacy. A mismanaged legacy at that, and one well beyond the scope of my usual summary reviews. The game has been re-released in multiple forms, unfortunately leaving the most widely available as the not-so-good 20th anniversary edition. I played using the Megaton Edition I had lying around, and would recommend trying to find a key for that over the newest source port due to issues I've heard about. The story and atmosphere is... well it's certainly of the time, to some degree. Duke being the archetypical 80s action movie hero, womanizing and 'cooler than cool' while the game world is filled with adult signs, strippers, porno, and all surrounded by bog standard evil and gross aliens. No, of course it's not meant to be taken seriously, and ignoring those who took the wro...
