Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Review
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (And by extension Escape from butcher bay) complete.
Butcher bay is definitely peak jank, but it's pretty fun. Does the modern "stealth, shoot, or talk, play it your way" bullshit in a manner that actually ends up feeling rather natural. As opposed to "stealth is always optimal cause you can always shoot later." Since oftentimes starting a shootout strong is what makes you win it. The melee fighting is again, jank, but done with some satisfying weight to each punch so I can't complain. All in all, a fun 8ish hour romp of a game that has three solid acts to play itself out in. Well, two solid one finale but by then brevity is appreciated.
Dark Athena starts strong, feeling like butcher bay refined with less jank more clear signposting of setpieces and intended routes. But then runs out of ideas so puts you in an utterly generic shooter for the last two thirds of it's runtime. The entire second half giving you an infinite ammo sticky bomb launcher to just kill all fun from orbit. At least it's over with quickly by then.
So, Butcher Bay Good, Athena.... well Butcher bay good.
