DBZ: Kakarot Review
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot complete besides DLC.... Wait, I played Kakarot? Okay hear me out.
I have no nostalgia for Dragon Ball Z, I have seen the abridged series, and I semi-recently watched all of the original Dragon Ball Subbed. So I was both totally spoiled, not wanting to watch a dub, and not having any nostalgic bias.... So I realized, why not just play Kakarot, and fill in the blanks by watching highlights of the anime on youtube.
It... Kind of worked. The gameplay is very samey, the open-world is quite frankly a waste of effort on the developer's part, there are significant dips in quality at times and entire, important scenes just straightup missing.
Buuuut, it adds lore and character development via sidequests. Including to those left behind from OGDB like Launch and Tenshinhan. The combat is still fun and satisfying once you get a feel for it. When they do animate something the 3d models do an amazing job of making a scene their own, vs FighterZ which is more about emulating the original look entirely.
They also made the classical correct decision to make sure all the final parts are heavily animated and well structured so it's only the middle that dips down in quality.
I've also heard the DLC, which by it's own nature doesn't need to artificially extend playtime, is superior in a lot of ways. Which makes me really happy that they're doing a 2nd round of story DLC starting with Bardock.
All in all, if you don't really want to watch dragon ball Z. But also have watched OGDB, and want to watch super. This is honestly the fastest, most enjoyable way to fill that hole. Just make sure to watch the abridged series and have a friend who can show you the bits they missed.
Also regardless of your status on Dragon Ball I'm gonna keep saying it, go watch DBS: Broly. That movie is just amazing.
