Descenders Review

I'm genuinely not sure what I think of Descenders. On one hand, barreling downhill at high speeds, taking sharp turns and doing the occasional trick off of steady jumps? That's fun, that's the game at it's peak when I got spotify going making my own downhill biking music video... Then the random track generation will create a jump I literally cannot complete, forcing a bail. Which costs me multiple lives because I was going so fast. So instead of that high intensity exciting downhill gameplay. I brake, a lot, and keep a steady speed the whole way down. Okay, I guess this is more technical. That's fine, more realistic is okay. I guess I'll go first person to match and take the briefer bursts of excitement with the risks they incur. Then I hit a boss jump. At the boss jump, I spend my 7 lives trying and failing to make the exact speed necessary to land on the opposite ramp. Except half the time I will land on it, then just bail anyway cause it was too big a drop. Well I'm sorry game I'm not the one who put the finish line on top of a goddamn tower. And I come away from it all thinking "Man, this controls really well and has an amazing sense of speed. I wish the core gameplay loop reinforced that in any way, shape or form."
