Makai Toushi SaGa Review

Makai Toushi SaGa, or Final Fantasy Legend 1. Beat, on the Wonderswan with translation and bugfixes specifically. It's got some powerful retro RPG energy, with minimal dialogue, tons of random encounters, and relatively simple and easily broken combat. But the limited weapon uses keeps you thinking and leads to a pretty fun experience, so long as you save often and don't softlock yourself. Making your own party out of the 3 available options makes for pretty fun customization, akin to FF1 with the jobs. The music is solid and the enemy variety rather fun to learn optimal counters for. The system wherein the same enemies stack. thus becoming vulnerable to aoe, but different enemies are only vulnerable to an even further specific subset of spells. *Sounds* like completely janky garbage. But the game makes the most of what was probably a hardware limitation with what feels like carefully designed encounter tables. Making sure nothing too stupid happens. As I understand it, this game is pretty far from what people actually love about the SaGa series, and is more in-line with a FF spinoff, thus why the name FF Legend seems to stick. But it's a lovely game, not overly long and a perfect old-school JRPG snack of an adventure. With a rather hilarious memeworthy bug at the end for good measure.
